VEL TECH SCHOLARSHIPS FOR PROMISING STUDENTS, CHENNAI.

Over Rs.5 crore will be distributed this year to meritorious students all over India, thanks to the Mahatma Gandhi scholarship schemes offered by Vel Tech Dr. RR & Dr. SR Technical University.
Fully-paid scholarships will be offered to the first three plus-two toppers from each states applying for engineering at Vel Tech. Also one topper from each Union Territory will get the scholarship. It will take care of tuition, hostel and boarding fees for all four year of their education. “The top three applicants in each State will get total exemption regardless of any other factors,” says Vice-Chancellor Rangarajan Mahalakshmi. The 78 scholarships will be distributed to students independent of their financial ability or the courses they choose.
 Another 100 applicants will receive 50 percent coverage of their fees if they score 90 percent average in the mathematics, physics and chemistry examinations. The deadline for submission of application is April 30 and all applicants must take the Vel Tech All India Engineering Entrance Examination on May 10.
Through these scholarship schemes, Vel Tech aims to provide premier engineering and management courses for the most deserving and promising students, Ms. Mahalakshmi said. However, the scholarships will be available only to students applying to the main university at Avadi here and not to the other institutes affiliated to Anna University, of Madras or MGR Medical University.
The Vel Tech Institutions were founded by Professor of Electrical and Mechanical Engineering R. Rangarajan, now Chancellor of the university, who was a man of modest means. “He started from scratch,” said Ms. Mahalakshmi. Through his academic performance and experience as a Tamil Nadu Electricity Board engineer, he became an original equipment manufacturer for Ashok Leyland. He soon realized that his calling lay in educating the next generation of industrialists. He and his wife, Sakunthala, who is Pro-Chancellor, established Vel Tech University at Avadi, which became a deemed technical university 15 years ago. 
Offering undergraduate, postgraduate and Ph.D. courses in engineering, management, computer science and applications and humanities, the university has maintained a reputation for its performance in placements, according to Professor of Mechanical Engineering I. Ravindranathan, who is in charge of placement operations. It has also partnered with Oracle, Microsoft, CISCO, NASSCOM and the British Council for Business English to provide professional certification programmes for its students.
 According to Director K.V.D. Kishore Kumar, last year over85,000 students nationwide participated in Vel Tech’s placement events and 99 percent of the institutions’ eligible students were offered jobs(1,000 offers) in leading companies including Tata, Reliance and Infosys(in total 3,000 job offers were made).
The Vel Tech City of Education has a technical university, two engineering colleges affiliated to Anna University, four business schools, a nursing college and a physiotherapy college, a polytechnic college, and a matriculation and international school. It has a total of 12,000 students.

CAMBRIDGE UNIVERSITY ANNOUNCES SCHOLARSHIPS.

The University of Cambridge on Monday announced a new scholarship
Programme for Indian students in honour of prime Minister Monmohan Singh. The Manmohan Singh Undergraduate Scholarship Programme starting from 2010 will provide full funding, covering fees and means-tested maintenance for undergraduate study in any subject at any of the collages that are part of the university.

A $ 1.5 million fund has been set up to support Indian students it will be launched with gifts from Sir Evelyn and Lady Lynn forester de Rothschild through the Eranda Foundation and the Sunil Bharti Mittal-Ied Company, Bharti Airtel, Vice-Chancellor of the university Alison Richard announced at a press conference here.

The University is honoured that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who is such a distinguished Cambridge alumnus, has agreed to land his name to this important initiative. This is another great example of the breadth and depth of the Cambridge India partnership. As the programme develops, there are expected to be up to 10 Manmohan Singh undergraduate Scholars Studying at the university”, said prof . Richard.

“This scholarship will be a need-based programme. Interested students can apply to the university or any of the 28 collages under it. Of the selected students, scholarships will be awarded on the basis of their financial aid need, which will be assessed by the Cambridge Overseas Trust” she pointed out.

In a message released by the university on Monday, Dr. Singh said he was humbled by the honour and expressed confidence that the programme would not only help strengthen relations between the peoples of India and the U.K. but also serve “our shared objective of creating a better world based on equity and justice”

Dr. Singh graduated from Cambridge with a First in Economics in the late 1950s. The university that has entered its 800th year of existence also launched three Manmohan Singh Scholarships for post graduate students at St. John’s College, Cambridge,in 2007.

SCHOLARSHIP FOR HIGHER EDUCATION (SHE).

‘Innovation in Science Pursuit for Inspired Research’ (INSPIRE) being implemented by the Department of Science and Technology (DST), New Delhi invites application from eligible candidates for Scholarship for Higher Education (SHE) component of INSPIRE.

About INSPIRE: Programme includes three components namely Scheme for Early Attraction of Talents for Science (Seats), Scholarships for Higher Education (SHE) and Assured Opportunity for Research Careers (AORC). The Scheme SHE is focused on attraction of talent to study of natural / basic Sciences at the Bachelor and Master’s level Education. SHE is currently limited to support for educational programmes at BSc, BSc (Hons). MSc and integrated Master’s level course in Sciences leading to MSc in any branch of natural and basic Sciences namely Mathematics, Statistics, Physics, Chemistry, Earth Sciences and Life Sciences.

(Hons.), integrated M.Sc.) in any one of the recognized institutions in India. The maximum amount of scholarship payable to any scholar shall not exceed Rs. 95,000/-. Applicants for these scholarships are required to satisfy the following conditions:
 
1.    They must possess a First Class degree or an equivalent diploma of the same standard from a recognized Indian university.
2.    They must have secured admission or have applied for admission in reputable foreign universities for courses commencing from September, 2009 but not later than February, 2010.

Candidates studying in the Final Year of degree or diploma courses are also eligible to apply, provided they produce their Final Year Certificate before end of June, 2009. Government and Quasi-Government Officers with a creditable academic record, going abroad for specialized qualifications are also eligible to apply.

Preliminary application should be forwarded to the manager, K.C. Mahindra Education Trust, Cecil Court, 3rd Floor, Near Regal Cinema, Mahakavi Bhushan Marg, Mumbai 400 001, along with 25 cms x 18 cms self-addressed envelope With Rs.10.00 postage stamps affixed, which should reach us not later than 28th February, 2009. The Prescribed application form will be sent only to those candidates who are considered to have the requisite qualifications as stated above.

AWARD OF STATE GOVERNMENT SCHOLARSHIP TO ENGINEERING STUDENTS OF ORISSA.

Biju Patnaik University of Technology Orissa, Higher Education Department, the State Government has introduced a Merit-cum-means Scholarship Scheme for the student of Orissa pursuing degree level courses in the field of Engineering (& MBBS, BDS). In this scheme 10,000 students shall get scholarship@Rs.10,000/- (Rupees Ten Thousand only) per year till completion of their studies.

JAWAHARLAL NEHRU SCHOLARSHIPS FOR DOCTORAL STUDIES.

The Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial Fund offers Scholarships for duration of up to 2 years to the Indian Nationals and nationals of other Asian countries for Ph.D. studies in India.

Eligibility: Post–Graduate degree in First Class: below 35 years of age; Full-time Ph.D. Scholar and should already be registered for Ph.D. in an Indian University / Institution.

Fields of Study: Science & Technology / Religion & Culture / Social Science / Indian History / Economic Development / Environment and Nehru Studies.

Monthly stipend: Rs 9000/- and annual Contingency up to Rs. 12,000/-

Application form can be obtained from the Administrative Secretary, Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial Fund, Teen Murti House, New Delhi 110011 by sending a postal order or money order of Rs.50/- in the name of “Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial Fund “ payable at New Delhi.
